Instructions for Administering Oral Viscous Budesonide for Eosinophilic Esophagitis (EoE)
Budesonide has a naturally bitter taste, so it is commonly mixed with a sweetener such as sucralose (e.g., Splenda), pancake syrup, chocolate syrup, honey, or agave nectar to create a thick slurry, known as oral viscous budesonide.
Suggested Sweetener Mixtures:
Splenda: 5 packets
Applesauce: 1 teaspoon
Honey or Agave Nectar: 1 teaspoon
Steps to Prepare and Administer Oral Viscous Budesonide:
Prepare the Budesonide Solution:
Open the budesonide respule by twisting off the tab on the container.
Pour the liquid medicine (approximately 2 mL or less than ½ teaspoon) into a small cup, such as a measuring cup or medicine cup.
Mix with a Vehicle:
Add the chosen sweetener or vehicle (e.g., honey, syrup, or Splenda).
Stir the mixture until it reaches a thick, slurry-like consistency. This consistency is necessary to coat the esophagus effectively.
Administer the Solution:
Swallow the entire mixture slowly to ensure adequate esophageal coating.
Post-Dosing Instructions:
Avoid eating or drinking anything for at least 45 minutes after taking the medicine to maximize its effectiveness.
You may rinse your mouth and spit out the water or brush your teeth after swallowing the medicine, but do not swallow any water during this time.
Following these instructions will help ensure proper delivery of the medication to the esophagus for optimal treatment outcomes.
